The architectural project for the requalification and adaptation works of the “Casa do Director do Aeroporto” in Vila do Porto, on the island of Santa Maria, aims to restore the existing building and implement the Headquarters of the Portuguese Space Agency, in Santa Maria island, Azores.
This reconversion project guided by respect for the existing volume, with the maintenance of the original facades, which will be recovered and painted, as well as with the replacement of the existing roof with a tilted solution.
Inside, the proposal is to entirely remodel and redefine the building, adjusting its spaces to its new function. The spatial and functional organization responds to the programmatic requirements arising from the administrative nature of the Headquarters of the Portuguese Space Agency, by creating different areas that are either more public or more private. The reception, meeting rooms, support offices and a multipurpose room are located on the ground floor, while the offices and more restricted work areas are on the upper floor.
This remodeling project also includes the reorganization of the exterior area through the creation of different gardens, parking areas and a large patio that makes the transition between the interior and exterior of the building, providing a visual and spatial continuity.
The project of the Headquarters of the Portuguese Space Agency expresses in a contemporary way the volumetry of the existing elements, while exploring the relationship between the interior and exterior spaces, respecting the building pattern and the urban and landscape values of the location.
